Frequently asked questions

01.

What if I need help outside of regular hours?

Crest Counselling is not a crisis service. If you are in crisis or need immediate support, please call 000 or visit your local emergency department. You can also contact a 24/7 helpline such as Lifeline (13 11 14) or Beyond Blue (1300 22 4636) for urgent assistance.

We do, however, offer appointments after hours and on weekends to accommodate clients with busy schedules. Please get in touch to discuss availability and find a time that works for you.

02.

Do you offer online/telehealth apointments?

Yes! We offer telehealth appointments as well as in-person appointments (in Albany). You can book a telehealth appointment through our online booking system or contact us to enquire about after hours availability.

03.

Can I book infrequent one-off sessions?

Yes, we understand that some clients may prefer or need occasional sessions rather than a regular ongoing commitment. Scientific research shows that regular counselling, with more sessions early in your journey and tapering to more infrequent sessions down the track, has the best outcomes for clients. However, we understand that this is not practical or possible for some of our clients. We are happy to support you with one-off sessions when needed and will discuss your goals to ensure the most effective approach for your situation.

04.

Do you offer services to the LGBTQIA+ community?

Absolutely! At Crest Counselling, we are committed to providing inclusive, affirming, and supportive care to everyone, including the LGBTQIA+ community. All identities and relationships are welcome here.

05.

Do you work with children?

No, we specialise in working with individuals and couples. However, we’d be happy to provide referrals to trusted colleagues who work with children and families.

06.

I don’t like talking about my problems. Why should I go to therapy?

It’s natural to feel hesitant about opening up, especially if you’re not used to talking about your struggles. Therapy isn’t about forcing you to talk but about providing a supportive space where you can explore your feelings at your own pace. You’ll be guided by a professional who can help you understand your thoughts, emotions, and experiences in a safe, non-judgmental way. Many clients find that the process helps them gain clarity, reduce stress, and build coping skills for life's challenges.

07.

My partner and I are having problems. Should we be in individual or couples counselling?

The choice between individual or couples counselling depends on your unique situation. If you and your partner are experiencing relationship challenges, couples counselling can provide a supportive space to address issues together. However, individual counselling may also be beneficial if you wish to work on personal aspects that might be affecting your relationship. Sometimes, clients choose a combination of both approaches. We can discuss the best option for you during a free 15 minute phone consultation.

08.

How do I book a session?

Booking a session is simple! You can book directly through our website or send us a text, call or email. We’ll discuss your needs and schedule your first appointment.

09.

Can I claim counselling through Medicare or a mental health care plan?

Unfortunately, the Medicare Rebate and mental health care plans do not cover counselling. However, we have set our prices to be comparable to the out of pocket expense of seeing a psychologist under a mental health care plan.

10.

How long will counselling take?

Every couple and individual is different, so there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Some people see progress in just a few sessions, while others may benefit from longer-term support. During your first session, we’ll work with you to create a plan that fits your goals and needs.
